Stomping Ground Collingwood, Melbourne

A challenging installation delivering extended dining space
Everyone is welcome at this flagship Melbourne beer hall, brewery, and dining space created by Studio Y for Stomping Ground Brewing Co. in Collingwood.
Working closely with MIC Building company we removed three sections of the existing roof to create a retractable roof over the internal courtyard providing all weather protection and allowing light to stream in.
There were unforeseen complications with the saw-tooth roof design, and the timber trusses were heavily warped which made it difficult to run the new roofing systems parallel. Retrofitting shade systems to old buildings is never easy in buildings if walls and ceilings are not square. Issues like this put some pressure on our design and installation team, but they never shy away from the challenge and always deliver in the end.
The result is a brilliantly clever dining space allowing for the sun to pour in and protection from the rain when required. It might not be obvious, but next time you are relaxing at the Stomping Ground Brewing Co look up and around at the pillars and beams and retractable roofing because they are quite a feat of engineering that we are all proud of.
